ABSTRACT MOVIE

Abstract Movie (2023)

Abstract Movie is an experimental short film exploring movement, perception, and the rhythms of urban space. The film uses everyday fragments, shadows, reflections, and passing shapes to suggest a shifting visual narrative rather than a literal story. It invites the viewer to look closely at pattern and motion, and to find structure in the unexpected.

The project grew out of my interest in drawing, composition, and visual attention, and the film became a way to investigate those ideas through moving image. It is an invitation to notice: not what something is, but how it moves through time.

The film went on to receive several awards at international short film festivals, recognising its experimental approach and visual design.

ABSTRACT MOVIE POSTER

Tom McPherson is a British artist, filmmaker, educator, and producer. He is the founder of Circle Line Art School, an online art education platform established in 2011 that focuses on drawing, observation, and linear perspective. Through his teaching and publications, McPherson has helped thousands of people develop their drawing skills, from beginners to advanced students.

Alongside his educational work, McPherson creates experimental films that explore movement, urban space, and visual attention through abstraction rather than narrative. His first film, Abstract Movie (2023), received awards including Best Arthouse Short Film at the 8 & Halfilm Awards and Best Experimental Film at both the Future of Film Awards and the Monument Valley International Film Festival.

His most recent work, Abstract Movie 2: London, continues this exploration, focusing on the architecture and rhythms of the City of London through a non-narrative, observational approach. McPherson’s film work forms part of an ongoing investigation into drawing, composition, and the experience of time through moving image.
